Name of Program: REaCH (Rutgers Early College Humanities Program)
Unit or Department Sponsoring Program: REaCH
Website: not specified
Program Description: Rutgers University has created an entirely new initiative, the Rutgers Early College Humanities Program (REaCH).  REaCH is a highly innovative educational enrichment program whose overall mission is to break the cycle of poverty for high school age youth from low-income communities by helping them to both gain access to college and to succeed once there.  The program does this by offering them an early college experience, that is, the opportunity while they are still in high school to take a college-level, credit-granting course in a variety of humanities disciplines. All REaCH projects will be offered in partnership with either a school system or a community-based organization (such as a Boys and Girls Club) and will be presented at a facility of the collaborating partner or at one of Rutgers’ campuses or off-campus sites (depending on logistical considerations).  Through these community-based partnerships, REaCH courses will be presented in either of three different formats; as 1) a during-school-hours two semester course, or 2) an after-school two semester course or 3) a five week summer course.  In each format participants gain first-hand experience of what college is like, studying with college professors, reading college texts, completing college assignments, and acquiring an understanding of the college environment and what will be expected of them there.  They have the opportunity to explore some of the great masterpieces, classic texts, topics, themes and historical periods in painting, sculpture, architecture, fiction, drama, poetry, American history and philosophy.  This educational experience serves to demystify college for students from underserved communities, excites them about learning, intensifies their desire to continue with their education, builds their confidence that they can handle college, and provides them with a degree of conceptual and cultural preparation that they cannot gain through their regular high school studies.  Each REaCH course enrolls approximately 25-30 students. Rutgers grants a certificate of achievement to any student completing a REaCH course and from four to six college credits to students completing it at a high level of academic performance. Students can also earn high school credit for their successful participation in the course.  The in-school course can also include a professional development component, where several high school teachers are assigned to attend class sessions, providing them with exposure to the course’s pedagogy and course content, to further their own professional development, thereby building the quality of instruction at each participating school for current and future generations of students.

Name of Program: Spatial Literacy
Unit or Department Sponsoring Program: Walton Center for Remote Sensing & Spatial Analysis
Website:  http://www.crssa.rutgers.edu/SpatialLiteracy/index.html
Program Description: Spatial literacy and associated geospatial technologies are taking an increasingly important role in society at large.  In response to critical gaps in how our educational system addresses spatial literacy, the Grant F. Walton Center for Remote Sensing & Spatial Analysis(CRSSA) (www.crssa.rutgers.edu) is spearheading a Spatial Literacy Outreach and Education Initiative.  This goal of this initiative is to enhance the spatial literacy within the K-12 curriculum as well as at the university level; Our initial objectives are the design and distribution of web-based education materials to promote spatial literacy at the 5-12 grade levels.  Working with the RU C.O.O.L. Classroom team of graduate educators, web designers, graphic artists and classroom teachers (http://www.coolclassroom.org/home.html ), we propose to develop a series of innovative teaching modules that will introduce students to geospatial technology and its applications.  Presented in a problem-based format students will be actively engaged in using spatial thinking to solve real-world problems.   The web-based format will be graphically rich incorporating a diversity of digital maps, images and time series data.  These modules will be field tested by classroom educators and designed to fulfill New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards.

Name of Program: Project Learn
Unit or Department Sponsoring Program: Institute for Health, health Care Policy and Aging Research
Website: http://www.ihhcpar.rutgers.edu/projectlearn/
Program Description: In accordance with the national goals of HEALTHY PEOPLE 2010, Project L/EARN targets members of groups that have been traditionally under-represented in health-related graduate programs with the intent of increasing the number of health researchers from those groups. Project L/EARN identifies students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, first generation college attendees, and those from racial/ethnic minority groups who have an interest in health-related social science fields, and provides them with training, experience and mentoring to make them stronger candidates for admission to graduate programs. Past interns have come from a variety of majors, including psychology, sociology, economics, political science, nursing, public health, pharmacy, biology, statistics, urban studies, and public policy. Project L/EARN is open to students from any U.S. college or university. Project L/EARN is a research training program of the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research at Rutgers University.

The summer program is an intensive ten-week internship opportunity for qualified students who would like to obtain research skills and "hands-on" experience in health services research under the guidance of a distinguished faculty mentor. Summer training often leads to involvement in faculty research during the subsequent academic year . Faculty mentors represent a diverse array of disciplines, including health economics, medical sociology, medical anthropology, public health, social work, nursing, and health psychology; all head vigorous research programs. Each intern will be matched with a faculty mentor whose work is most closely aligned with his or her particular interests, skills, and background.

The core of the summer program is daily lectures and computer laboratory sessions that provide training in research methods, study design, data management, and statistical analysis (programming in SPSS). Project L/EARN has been designated as one of Rutgers University's Graduate Education Preparation Programs . Interns will be provided with GRE preparation, as well as extensive guidance with respect to applying to graduate school.

Unit or Department Sponsoring Program: Waksman Institute
Website: http://morgan.rutgers.edu
Program Description: The Waksman Student Scholars Program is designed help high school students learn modern molecular genetics by having them engage in genuine scientific research projects. It is a two-part program aimed at both teachers and students. The Summer Institute: A teacher and two students from a maximum of 20 high schools commute to the Waksman Institute at Rutgers University in Piscataway, NJ daily for a month in July. There they learn about a research project in molecular biology. The projects change from year to year. Both the background material and the laboratory skills necessary to carry out the project are presented. The Academic Year: Teachers and students return to their classrooms in September and begin working on the research project. Additional students are recruited. Some students earn Rutgers University credit by participating in a formal course. Some schools offer a research course for high school credit; others offer the research as an after-school activity. The students return to Rutgers for six meetings during the academic year. At the end of the year, in June, a forum is held where students present the results of their studies at a poster session.

Name of Program: Law, Justice and Rights in Bolivia
Unit or Department Sponsoring Program: Center for Latin American Studies/Dept of Anthropology
Website: http://www.rulas.rutgers.edu/
Program Description: What are “rights,” and how are they understood and practiced in societies very different from our own? These are some of the themes that this course will explore.  Conducted in the city of Cochabamba, Bolivia during the summer, this course will focus on topics related to the practices and realities of the Bolivian justice system, from the perspectives of those who create, manage, and work in the system, and those who are affected by it. Through readings, lectures, discussions, informal meetings, and hands-on participation, students will have the opportunity to learn first-hand about the workings of the Bolivian legal system, the meanings of justice, and the practice of rights by poor, indigenous people living in a Bolivian city. Students will meet and study with justice professionals in Bolivia, to learn about how a foreign judicial system operates, and will meet with human rights advocates to develop a sense of how human rights promotion and defense works “on the ground” in Latin America. In addition to a three-credit course on the topic of Law, Justice and Rights in Bolivia, students will enroll in an additional three-credit practicum service-learning course that will be run simultaneously, offering students a total of six credits for their participation in the program. The practicum will involve instruction in anthropological field research techniques, followed by an independent, field-based student research project. Additionally, students will work side-by-side with residents of one local neighborhood to construct a community center, to be used subsequently as a location for an access-to justice program that this ongoing project plans to create.

Name of Program: Marshall Brennan Fellowship in Constitutional Literacy
Unit or Department Sponsoring Program: Camden Law
Website: http://www.camlaw.rutgers.edu; http://www-camlaw.rutgers.edu/cgi-bin/course-description.cgi?class=784
Program Description: The Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Fellowship Program enlists law students in an effort to increase civic literacy and participation in American democracy. Talented second- and third- year law students prepare and teach a course in Constitutional Law to Camden high school students. The aim is to make the Constitution “come alive” for young people in Camden while simultaneously improving law students' ability to translate and explain complicated legal concepts into lay terms. Marshall-Brennan is a sequential two-semester course. In the fall semester, meeting weekly in a two-hour seminar, the Fellows will study Constitutional law with a focus on cases and concepts concerning young people and schools. They will draft and execute lesson plans relating to these topics and will discuss pedagogy. Fellows also will research and write a paper on a relevant topic. The fall seminar provides two course credits and qualifies as “writing intensive.” In the spring, teams of two Fellows each will teach Constitutional law courses at high schools in Camden, typically conducting four, 45-minute class sessions each week. Fellows will be entirely responsible for their courses. They will interact with high school teachers, design lesson plans, lead classes and evaluate students. With a continuing focus on issues of law, the spring Seminar sessions also will explore teaching strategies and classroom dynamics and will provide general support for Fellows. The spring course provides three non-course credits and no writing credits.

Name of Program: A Learning Progression for Developing Understandings of Genetics
Unit or Department Sponsoring Program: Graduate School of Education, Department of Teaching and Learning
Website: none
Program Description: Learning progressions are a new way of conceptualizing learning as it occurs across multiple grades and as a consequence of targeted instruction and assessment around a small set of core ideas. These progressions describe the pathways that learners might take in developing successively more sophisticated ways of thinking about key ideas and practices in a discipline. This research project seeks to develop and empirically validate a learning progression for deepening students’ understandings of few foundational ideas in genetics. The proposed progression spans the elementary, middle, and high school grade bands (5th -10th grade).  To instantiate this progression through classroom instruction my team and I developed 6-8 weeks long instructional units that were taught in 7th and 8th  grades. This work will provide insights about the ways in which learning develops over time and how we can foster such learning through coordinated instruction and assessments that are based on a cognitive model of learning in the domain.

Name of Program: Ethics in Science
Unit or Department Sponsoring Program: SEBS
Website: none
Program Description: The projects to follow were each created by teams of 2-6 Rutgers University students enrolled in the Jr/Sr Colloquium classes "Ethics in Science" and "Issues in Animals and Agriculture" under the direction of Dr. Julie Fagan, Associate Professor in the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences at Rutgers University. The ultimate goal (within the group and with the professor's input) is to actually take action on a particular area of concern: i.e., to do something to make a difference in society.  Each student was instructed to individually author and submit an editorial to a newspaper. To make a difference in society, the small group was instructed to come up with some strategy – either some type of community service or writing up a legislative bill prototype that would change the way things are presently done. Getting a legislative bill passed as law sometimes takes years and may never come to fruition. Preliminary legislative bills with informational power points along with the cover letter were sent to legislators that had shown an interest in the topic. Knowledge of current laws (federal, state, county or municipality), the background/history of the topic, in depth facts regarding the topics were acquired (and presented in most cases as a power point). Then, most importantly, was the creation of a solution to the issue.  We have written and sent many preliminary bills to legislators regarding scientific, health and environmental issues and well as animal and agricultural research problems. We have also developed programs and have gone out into the community to disseminate information. Examples of such projects are found at: http://animalsandagriculture.rutgers.edu, http://ethicsinscience.rutgers.edu, http://goingreen.rutgers.edu.  There is much to be done out in the real world. So, just don't sit back and let life happen. YOU can help change the world. Open your mouth and mind and take action!

Unit or Department Sponsoring Program: RuCCS
Website: No website for activities that are relevant to education.
Program Description: All education efforts are based on Cognitive Science research as to what learners know something already as opposed to  push-down curricula. The emphasis is on domain-specific knowledge and the "applications" use the idea that domains have interrelated concepts, that the language of science and math gets its meaning from the domain, and that tools of observation, reporting, and discovery serve the domains in questions. There are some general methods that apply to science: one keeps a rolling record - notebooks: work must be dated; evidence comes use of the experimental method, which embeds prediction and checking; scientists report their work.

Website: http://rise.rutgers.edu
Program Description: RiSE (Research in Science and Engineering) is a summer research program for college undergraduates which seeks to advance diversity in science, technology, engineering, and math. Students from across the United States and its territories spend the summer actively engaged in cutting-edge research in the laboratories of carefully matched faculty mentors. An outstanding suite of professional development activities, including training in scientific writing and speaking, career guidance, guest speakers, and GRE preparation, complements the research. The summer culminates in a Symposium, which is open to prospective students, their families and teachers, and members of the community.  RiSE alumni have an impressive record of award-winning presentations at national research conferences and of placement at prestigious graduate schools.  We especially encourage applications from students who are traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, from economically disadvantgaed backgrounds or first-generation college families, or attend colleges with limited research opportunities.
